The project was the master plan
for a university in the far north of Thailand, located in the mountains, 15
kilometers from an urban area.
The university was founded not
only for students in the north, but also for those from the economic rectangle
including Myanmar, Laos and the southern China.
The master plan adopted the campus
town concept, developing the university and surrounding community at the same
time. The master plan was laid on an east-west axis called the Chalerm-Pra-Kiat
Axis, which literally translates as the Royal Prestige Enhancement Axis. To the
west, Doi Ngam mountain provides a beautiful backdrop.
The buildings are lined along the
axis in sequence as follows: the main auditorium at the front, the office of
university affairs on both sides, and a multipurpose field in the middle,
drawing the vista toward the Office of the President.
From this point, the Royal Prestige
Enhancement Axis expands to encompass a secondary axis southward, lined with
buildings, including an academic service building, a research building, a
canteen, and a student activities area.
To aid energy conservation, natural light was allowed in
through an opening in the middle of the building. Architectural shading devices
were used along the western elevation to reduce heat. Everything was designed
to comply with a simple architectural form, with prefabrication substantially
reducing construction time.
